It’s for good reason that Charlevoix tops most lists of the best places to visit in Michigan for a weekend getaway. Located in the north of the state, this pretty town sits on a sliver of land that separates Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix, with the smaller Round Lake and its canal connecting these two bodies of water. Its lakeside setting is a big draw for water sports enthusiasts and boaters, while those wanting to sunbathe or swim head to Michigan Beach Park on the Lake Michigan side of town.

Among Charlevoix’s quirkiest attractions are its 28 quaint Mushroom Houses. Also known as “Gnome Homes,” these whimsical structures were designed by Earl Young and are reminiscent of the Hobbit homes seen in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Other must-sees include Castle Farms, a 1918 model dairy farm turned into a museum and event venue, and the Little Traverse Wheelway, a 23-mile-long scenic pathway along Lake Michigan perfect for biking and walking. Great places to stay here include Weathervane Terrace Inn & Suites and The Earl of Charlevoix, both just steps away from the three lakes.

Known as the "Alpine Village" for its Swiss-themed architecture and welcoming atmosphere, it’s surrounded by no less than 90 inland lakes and five rivers all just waiting to be explored. A visit to Pigeon River State Forest is a must-do and offers over 114,000 acres of attractive scenery to explore while hiking or biking, while Michigan attractions such as Mackinac Island and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore are close by.

Its location overlooking Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan certainly hasn’t hurt Petoskey’s reputation as a top getaway spot in the Great Lake State. Another big draw is the town’s proximity to Petoskey State Park, a 300-acre site with some of the best beaches in the Great Lakes region. Fun things to do here include swimming and camping; hiking along the beaches and trails through dunes and forests; and searching for the famed Petoskey stones, fossilized coral pieces that are unique to the area.

Be sure to allocate time to explore downtown Petoskey. The town’s historic Gaslight Shopping District is a delight to wander with its charming boutiques, galleries, and eateries, while the nearby Ernest Hemingway Cottage on Walloon Lake allows visitors to see where the famed author spent his summers. Come bedtime, hunker down for the night at Stafford's Perry Hotel, popular for its downtown location, or enjoy the contemporary charm of Apple Tree Inn.
